Wind farms cause environmental harm?
A Washington Post story, also carried on MSNBC.COM gives me hope we’ll soon see some more balanced reporting on the alternative energy craze. The article Renewable Energy’s Environmental Paradox provides a fairly balanced view of the issues.
While environmentalists and nature friendly people (me included) questioned some of the practices of the mining and energy exploration companies, the greens were giving a pass to solar and wind projects and the associated transmission lines. The greens have been telling us that solar and wind are free. They certainly have real financial and environment costs not only in the manufacture and transport of the equipment, often times made overseas, which means additional transport and manufacturing in countries with lower environmental standards, but also in their deployment.
It’s really interesting that the greens are only now realizing that we’ll need to damage nature and the landscape to make alternative energy actually useful.
They’re just now realizing this? What a light bulb moment! (CFL, of course!)
